The Art of Interior Care

A practical guide to maintaining a clean vehicle interior.

Start with the habit, not the products

A clean cabin is rarely the result of one ambitious Saturday. It is the result of small, regular resets — a bag taken out each evening, a quick pass of the vacuum every couple of weeks, nothing left to accumulate for a whole season.

The most effective habit is also the simplest: remove everything that does not belong in the vehicle every time you leave it. Clutter is what turns an easy ten-minute tidy into an afternoon project.

The order that matters

Work from top to bottom and from clean to dirty. Dust and debris fall, so the dashboard, vents and door tops come before the seats, and the seats before the floor. Save the glass for last — it is the surface that shows every streak an earlier step left behind.

Vacuum before you wipe. Loose grit dragged across a surface with a cloth is what causes the fine swirl marks on trim and the wear on fabric that no product can undo afterwards.

Different materials, different care

Leather prefers restraint: a soft brush or microfibre, a cleaner made for the purpose, and a conditioner a few times a year — not a weekly soaking. Modern coated leathers are durable, but they are not waterproof.

Touchscreens and glossy trim scratch easily and respond badly to household glass cleaner; a barely damp microfibre does more, with no damage. Fabric seats benefit more from prompt attention to a spill than from any deep treatment months later.

The ten-minute reset

Between proper details, keep a simple kit in the house, not the car: a microfibre cloth, an interior cleaner appropriate to your trim, and a small handheld vacuum. Ten minutes every other week keeps a cabin presentable.

Do not store cleaning chemicals inside the cabin — heat and cold degrade them, and in summer a pressurised can left in a parked car becomes a genuine hazard.

When to bring in a professional

Some jobs are simply equipment jobs: extracted carpets, steamed vents, the crevices between and under the seats. Once or twice a year, a comprehensive interior detail resets the cabin to a standard daily habits cannot reach — and makes those habits easier to keep.
